Birth of a Vision
The band was formed under the name King of None by a group of friends united by a clear ambition: to establish themselves as a fully fledged force within the Mauritian music scene.
Formed in 2018, Ryōshi was born from a shared ambition: to create music without compromise and leave a lasting artistic mark beyond the boundaries of Mauritius.
Rooted in progressive metalcore, the band blends crushing riffs, atmospheric textures, technical precision and raw emotion into a sound that is both aggressive and deeply expressive. For Ryōshi, music is more than performance, it is a constant search for evolution, creativity and identity.
The name Ryōshi carries a dual meaning. In Japanese, ryoshi traditionally means fisherman. Yet the band also embraces another interpretation: ryo as excel and shi as master, a philosophy of striving for excellence while mastering one's craft through dedication and creation.
From local underground venues to regional festivals, Ryōshi's guiding principle has remained unchanged: push creativity further and leave a permanent trace on the Mauritian, regional and international music scene.

The group began performing across the island, determined to present a distinctive and uncompromising sound to local audiences.
King of None unveiled its debut single, "Ascendence", accompanied by an official music video, the first concrete statement of the band's artistic identity.
The band made its first appearance at the Underground Rock Festival, stepping onto one of the country's major stages. It was a full-scale test and a resounding success.
Ryōshi left Mauritian shores for the first time to perform at Nuit de Kal in Réunion Island, sharing the stage with renowned French metal act Black Bomb A.
Upon returning to Mauritius, the band adopted the name Ryōshi, marking a major turning point in its artistic direction, musical vision and live performance philosophy.
As the world was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic, live music came to a halt. Despite the distance, the members remained connected and continued composing, using the period to push their creativity even further.
After a long silence, Ryōshi made its long-awaited return to live performance with new material, renewed energy and a stronger sonic identity.
Ryōshi released the single "Altered Evolution" alongside an official music video, further refining the band's progressive metalcore signature.
The band travelled once again to Réunion to perform at Maytal: La Revanche, strengthening its presence on the regional scene.
Ryōshi performed at the major Pepcity event at Tribeca Mall, bringing its music to a broader mainstream audience while staying true to its roots.
For the first time, Ryōshi travelled to Madagascar for a memorable three-date tour across Antananarivo, opening a new chapter in the band's international journey.
Ryōshi released its debut five-track EP, The Hunt, a milestone that captured years of growth, experimentation and artistic evolution.
Ryōshi received one of the strongest acknowledgements of its career by earning a nomination for "Live Band of the Year" at the Mauritius Music Awards.
Ryōshi released its first full-length album, The Forth Kind, eight tracks exploring new styles, influences and atmospheres.
From a group of friends in 2018 to a progressive metalcore act carrying Mauritian metal beyond its shores, Ryōshi continues to evolve with the same objective that ignited the project from day one: create without limits, excel through mastery, and leave a lasting mark on the musical landscape.
